The original bridge was a swing structure. In 1933, it underwent a major reconstruction which added the second railway track and rebuilt the central span so that it would rise parallel to the water surface. The spans were blown up in 1945, cutting off the island from the mainland. Only the bascule section has survived to this day. In 1990, it was granted the status of an industrial monument.
