PREMIERE | "AUTOtherapy" | a performance by the Kana Theater directed by Mateusz Przyłcki.
In 2023, 1,893 people in Poland lost their lives as a result of accidents on the road. 91 percent of these accidents were the fault of drivers. In the play "Autoterapia" we want to look at how Poles drive. Why do we so often exceed the speed limit and do not follow the rules of the road? What situations on the road bring us out of balance? What does it mean to be a "good driver"? Are men better drivers than women? What can we do so that not so many people are killed on the roads and everyone feels safe?
We also want to think about what triggers in us the fact of owning and using a car. How does it affect our sense of self-worth and our relationships with others? What makes us go from a calm, balanced person behind the wheel to a volcano of anger and aggression in a second? What emotions does driving a car trigger in us? Do we then feel more confident, independent, free? So it will also be a story about us as people and us as a nation - about our longings, fears, desires and beliefs, about unconscious habits and socially inherited patterns. All this with a large dose of subversive humor and in a non-obvious theatrical form. Our main inspiration for working on the performance is Bartosz Jozefiak's book "Everybody drives like that" (Czarne Publishing House, 2023). The script of the performance will be based on texts taken from the book, interviews we will conduct with drivers, pedestrians and cyclists, as well as on the personal experiences of the performers.
