In the Middle Ages, Trzebiatów was enclosed by a line of city walls that ran along Wąska, Kręta, Koza, Łukowa, Wojska Polskiego, and Henryka Sienkiewicza Streets. The town was further protected by the waters of the Młynówka and Rega rivers. A decisive event that shaped the town’s current appearance was the granting of town privileges. This took place on May 6, 1277. At that time, the town’s distinctive checkerboard street layout was established, centered around the main square—the market square. The city’s buildings consisted of Gothic brick houses, which were later rebuilt and are now primarily Baroque and Neoclassical structures dating from the 17th to the 19th centuries. The following structures have survived to this day in the Old Town: the Gothic Church of the Motherhood of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Baroque town hall, the Baroque-Classical palace, the townhouses along the market square, and the city walls with the Kaszana Tower. The Old Town area in Trzebiatów is listed in the register of historic monuments.
