The Museum in Koszalin invites you to a meeting with one of the key figures in Polish contemporary art – Anna Kutera. The artist, whose work includes performance, photography, video, and installations, will talk about her activities and many years of artistic practice.
The meeting aims to familiarize participants with the work of Anna Kutera, who has been consistently developing her artistic activity for nearly half a century. Participants will not only learn about the specifics of her work, but also see how contemporary means of expression become a tool for commenting on reality.
The artist began her performance activities in the 1970s. Early on in her career, she decided that traditional media—painting and drawing—were not sufficient for her reflections on the relativity of concepts and values. While studying in Wrocław, then the center of Polish conceptualism, she turned to new artistic trends. She co-founded the contextual art movement and contributed to shaping the foundations of feminist art. In her works, she often uses her own image, and behind the seemingly light form—humor or joke-like situations—lie reflections on difficult and ambiguous issues.
The issues addressed by Kutera remain relevant today, and some themes have even gained in significance. Her works explore, among other things, the role of the media in shaping the image of reality, the relationship between image/representation and what is real, and the mechanisms of deformation and manipulation associated with visual communication. Another important theme in the artist's work is her critical analysis of the consumerist model of the world and the ways in which the mass media construct our image of everyday life.
This year, the Museum in Koszalin has enriched its collection with works by Anna Kutera, currently on display in the exhibition "Reorientations. A glimpse into the contemporary art collection." The meeting will therefore also be an opportunity to discuss this latest acquisition. The funds for the purchase of the work come from the Minister of Culture and National Heritage's program "Contemporary Art Collections 2025."
