Lecture: Bolesław Chrobry's Poland and the Kingdom of Germany and the Holy Roman Empire

The Polish Historical Society – Szczecin Branch invites you to the Pomeranian Library for another meeting in the #ZoomNaHistorię series, combined with a lecture "The Poland of Bolesław Chrobry and the Kingdom of Germany and the Roman Empire" and a conversation with Prof. Andrzej Pleszczyński, an eminent medievalist and expert on the history of the early Piast dynasty. The starting point for the meeting will be the author's book "Bolesław Chrobry," inaugurating a new, long-term publishing series entitled "Poczet Władców Polskich" (Gallery of Polish Rulers), produced by the State Publishing Institute. This is the first project of its kind and on such a scale in Poland, in which eminent historians, based on the latest research findings and a broad source base, present the reigns of all Polish monarchs, including their lesser-known aspects. It is no coincidence that the opening volume of the series is devoted to Bolesław Chrobry. The publication was released in connection with the 1000th anniversary of the coronation of the first king of Poland and presents his reign in a broad political, military, and cultural context. The author guides the reader from the beginnings of the Polish state and Bolesław's youth, through his relations with Mieszko I, which were crucial for the construction of the monarchy, to the most important events of his reign: the martyrdom of St. Adalbert, the Congress of Gniezno, his efforts to be crowned, conflicts with Emperor Henry II, and his victorious expedition to Kiev. An important advantage of the book is its broad international perspective – Prof. Andrzej Pleszczyński also presents the political situation in the Empire, Bohemia, and Italy with great expertise, showing Bolesław Chrobry as a ruler operating at the center of Europe at that time. The whole is complemented by careful graphic design by Piotr Chuchla, thanks to which each volume of the series is also of exceptional editorial value. The meeting will be an opportunity to listen to a lecture, talk to the author, and discuss the significance of Bolesław Chrobry's reign for the history of the Polish state.
