The rude Pomeranian. From anecdote to image type. Meeting with Bartosz Wójcik

We invite you to a meeting with the author, during which Prof. Bartosz Wójcik, PhD, will talk about his book Grubiański Pomorzanin. Od anegdoty do imagotypu (The Rude Pomeranian: From Anecdote to Imagotype), published at the end of last year by Książnica Pomorska. The meeting will be moderated by Prof. Sławomir Iwasiów, PhD. The motif of the uncouth Pomeranian has accompanied the inhabitants of the Oder estuary for almost half a millennium. During this long period, dating back to the beginning of the modern era, dozens of independent editors have revised and published various versions of it. The roots of the motif seem anecdotal; it has been adapted in prose, poetry, and drama. It refers to a well-established stereotype with negative connotations about Pomerania and its inhabitants. On the one hand, it showed the perception of the indigenous population of this region, and on the other, it offered a way of dealing with this burdened image. This monograph is the first to analyze one of the most deeply rooted images accompanying the Pomeranians in an imagological context, while also searching for its contemporary traces. Bartosz Wójcik is a cultural and literary scholar with a PhD in history and a postdoctoral degree in literary studies. He is a professor at the University of Szczecin's Institute of Literature and New Media and head of the Regionalism and Borderlands Research Team. Long-time president of the OFFicyna Association and director of the Szczecin Film Festival. His research work includes conceptualizations of borders and borderlands, regionalist approaches in the field of literary and cultural history, especially in Pomerania, research on cultural transfer processes and the narrativization of cultural landscapes. The meeting with the author of the book promises to be extremely interesting.
