"The village that cannot be seen. The medieval cemetery in Żelewo and the search for the lost settlement" The museum invites you to a lecture from the series "Meetings in the market square tenement house" devoted to the results of archaeological research conducted in Żelewo. The meeting will tell the story of a medieval cemetery associated with the Cistercian estate in Kołbacz and explain why it is sometimes easier to find traces of the dead in the research area than the remains of a once-living settlement. The lecture will present the realities of life in a village belonging to the monastery – the duties of the inhabitants, feudal dependencies, and everyday survival strategies. Research methods combining data from archaeological excavations, written sources, and landscape analyses used in the search for the lost settlement will also be presented. The final part will discuss the organizational background of the research – the specifics of the work of a large research team and the course of fieldwork and training of international groups of students in Żelewo. The speaker will be Dr. Katarzyna Ślusarska, an archaeologist specializing in research on Bronze Age communities and belief and ritual systems of the northern Black Sea region. The author of a doctoral dissertation on this subject, she has many years of experience in archaeological research conducted in Poland and Ukraine, as well as in international scientific cooperation. She is currently a member of the Department of Archaeology at the University of Szczecin and a member of the Research Team on Modern Funeral Culture at the Institute of History of the University of Szczecin.????
