Lecture topic:
"In connection with the work at Łasztownia, where the new headquarters of the Contemporary Theater will be built, questions arise: Why conduct excavations when it is known that tenement houses and granaries once stood here?
That’s true—we do know. And that is precisely why, before we break ground, we spend long weeks in the archives. We review old maps, construction plans, inventories, photographs, technical documentation, and reports from previous surveys. This is part of what is known as preliminary research.
In the case of Łasztownia, there is a truly vast amount of material. Thanks to it, we were able to predict in advance what we would discover in the ground.
And indeed—where pre-war plans showed courtyards, we uncovered cobblestones; where granaries and tenement houses were drawn, walls and floors appeared. The plan matched reality down to the meter.
But this is where the most interesting part begins.
Archeology doesn’t end with what’s visible on maps.
We are interested in the earlier history—the one that no one drew or described.
Not to “discover what we already know,” but to uncover what no one has yet told.”
