Description:
Can we, for the sake of the ideals of sport and the Olympics, forget about the violation of democracy, the violation of freedom of speech and expression, and the violation of human rights? The consent we give—not only at the political and global levels, behind the closed doors of organizing committees. As individuals, do we have no influence on the reality around us? Are we powerless, or do we choose to remain powerless? Can a single, solitary gesture be the spark for greater change? Was Maria’s gesture of lowered hands an expression of precisely such an attitude? Did she change the world? Did she prevent a war?
NO. But at that moment, standing at attention, refusing to yield, she impressed Hitler, and her hated photograph became her ticket to saving people, her personal wartime passport. Change, upheaval, dissent begins with a single thought, which, when sent out into the world, can trigger an avalanche of events that transform reality.
