Press release from the Uckermark District:
The Uckermark District, the city of Gartz (Oder), and the municipality of Mescherin are jointly implementing a major infrastructure project aimed at further strengthening tourism and cross-border recreational opportunities in the region. As part of the Interreg-funded project, a section of the Oder-Neisse cycle route will be modernized, marking another important milestone in the planned cycle route from Berlin via Szczecin to Kołobrzeg.
Construction work will begin on June 15, 2026. In the first phase of the project, new rest and recreation areas will be created in the districts of Gartz (Oder) and Mescherin. Modern rest areas will be created there for cyclists, featuring covered seating areas, solar-powered charging stations for electric bikes, and so-called smartbenches. During this first phase of construction, there will be no restrictions on the Oder-Neisse cycle route.
Starting August 1, 2026, a comprehensive renovation of the section of the bike path in the Gartzer Schrey area will begin. Due to the necessary construction work, this section of the Oder-Neisse bike path will likely be completely closed until the first quarter of 2027.
The construction work is necessary because the existing road surface has suffered significant damage in recent years due to tree roots growing through it. To ensure safe and comfortable use of the road again in the future, the entire surface will be thoroughly renovated and covered with a new layer of asphalt.
A signposted detour route will be established for the duration of the closure. It runs through Gartz (Oder), Hohenreinkendorf, Tantow, Geesow, and Mescherin.
The Uckermark District and the municipality of Gartz (Oder) ask residents, tourism service providers, and visitors to the region for their understanding regarding the necessary restrictions during the construction work. The timing of the work has been chosen to minimize disruption to nature and tourism. The goal of this project is the long-term modernization of tourism infrastructure and a lasting increase in the attractiveness and modernization of the Oder-Neisse Cycle Route.
Despite the temporary detour, the towns affected by the work remain easily accessible. The project partners are convinced that these investments will bring long-term benefits for both tourism and regional development.
