The centre of the market square in Barlinek is decorated with a charming fountain with a statue of a girl defending herself against a gander. The sculpture was given to the town by two citizens of Barlinek, who made a considerable fortune in Germany; it is made by an artist from Munchen – Knut Ackerman (or Knut Akberg, as other sources say).

The fountain stands in place of the old town hall that burnt to the ground in 1852. Because of the statue, it is commonly known as Gęsiarka [the Goose Girl]. This picturesque fountain is a favourite place of meetings for the inhabitants.

Gęsiarka became the symbol of Barlinek, and the girl is connected with a local legend telling about a gooseherd who was unjustly sentenced to death for alleged witchcraft. She was save by geese that flew just before the execution and lifted her on their wings.
