The cemetery was established in the first half of the 19th century following a ban on burials at the existing church cemeteries within the city limits. The decision to designate a new burial site stemmed from an effort to improve the quality of groundwater and, consequently, to enhance hygiene standards. The cemetery features 19th-century gravestones and sections commemorating the victims of World War I and World War II.
