Here, in the heart of the old city, architectural monuments from Hanseatic, Swedish, Prussian and recent times stand side by side. Medieval and Baroque architecture meets the "new objectivity" of the early 20th century and prefabricated residential buildings from the GDR era. The city's landmark, the City Hall complex, is also here, presenting itself from its most impressive side. The town hall's unique facade and the massive Nicholas Church next door are best viewed and, of course, photographed from the Alter Markt. The sheet of water, along with a one-meter fountain, directly on the sidewalk of the Old Market, magically attracts children on hot summer days and provides entertainment for restaurant guests and passersby.
