The castle was built in the middle of the 13th century to protect the town of "Wesenberge". As a result of the Thirty Years' War, today you can only explore the preserved torso of the keep, also known as the Fangelturm, and parts of the castle wall. The Fangelturm now serves as an observation tower. The castle premises are now used as a local history room with an exhibition on fishing and regional history, as a forestry museum and tourist information center. As every year, the traditional castle festival takes place on the 1st weekend in July with a historical parade, knightly spectacles, dancing and fireworks.
