The municipal cemetery covers 20 hectares. It contains nearly 20,000 graves (including approximately 2,000 within the war cemetery). In the 1960s, exhumed remains were transferred here from all cemeteries within the city limits, including pre-war German and Jewish cemeteries, as well as from soldiers’ graves. Only the burials at the War Cemetery are reserved for specific groups of the deceased; here, there are sections for veterans and for victims of Siberian deportations, characterized by elements such as fragments of railroad tracks or posts bearing religious symbols. Visitors’ attention is drawn to the grave of Polish MP Sebastian Karpiniuk, one of the 96 victims of the presidential plane crash near Smolensk on April 10, 2010. Near the MP’s grave lies the grave of Air Force Colonel Wojciech Maniewski, a victim of the January 23, 2008, plane crash, in which 20 Air Force soldiers were killed when a CASA C295M military aircraft crashed near Mirosławiec. The cemetery has a well-functioning website with a search tool for graves by first and last name. Visitors may ride bicycles within the cemetery grounds. Dogs are not permitted. Memorial services are held in the chapel on the cemetery grounds or in the adjacent St. Adalbert Church, which serves as the heart of the local parish, encompassing the neighborhoods of Radzikowo, Witkowice, Europejskie, and the village of Zieleniewo.
