Hohenzieritz Castle was built between 1746 and 1751 as a single-story Baroque building. Beginning in 1790, at the behest of Karl II of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, the building was expanded and enlarged to a three-wing complex. Charles II's most famous daughter, Queen Louisa of Prussia, died here on July 19, 1810 after an illness of several weeks. There is a monument to her memory on the first floor of the castle. Behind the castle is one of the earliest landscape gardens in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Created since 1771 by the English garden architect Thomson, it includes the surroundings and the former Baroque garden.
