Folk dress was one of the basic elements that distinguished a regional group. Its genesis and form depended primarily on geographical, economic, social conditions, as well as historical events.Costume - festive clothing - was a kind of legitimacy informing about the origin and social position of the owner. It defined his property situation, marital status and profession. It was one of the few manifestations of folk culture in which superfluity and luxury were marked. The disappearance of folk costumes, which in Pomerania began as early as the second half of the 19th century, was largely associated with the development of industry and the abandonment of traditional lifestyles, and this process often proceeded rapidly. To modern times, there are few surviving testimonies of clothing once worn by residents of Pomeranian villages (on both sides of the present border). The National Museum in Szczecin at the exhibition "From the old chest. Old Pomeranian Costumes" presents the clothing of the inhabitants of: the rich, agricultural south -- the Pyrzyce Land, and from the coastal, fishing north -- Jamno, the Trzebiatow area and the Mönschgut peninsula on Rügen/Germany, through archival photographs, iconographic representations and through original, preserved clothing items. Many objects and photographs are presented to the public for the first time. The colorful variety of old clothes, which we can admire at the exhibition, is an excellent departure from the unified and homogeneous clothing of the 21st century. The exhibition From an old chest.
