"You're not even fit to be a maid!" her husband says to Delia, taking her paycheck with one hand and delivering a sassy slap with the other. Not funny? But how about having a good time in this (un)pleasant company? "Tomorrow Will Be Ours" - a powerful, yet funny and emotional female voice-over - has become one of the biggest blockbusters in Italy, surpassing even Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" and Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" at the local box office. This is due, among other things, to one of the most surprising - and at the same time satisfying - film endings of recent years.
"Tomorrow Will Be Ours" is the debut of comedian and actress Paola Cortellesi, who, following in the footsteps of Phoebe Waller-Bridge ("Fleabag"), also played the lead role in it. Any of us can identify with Delia, as we too accomplish the impossible on a daily basis - embracing home and work, children and elderly family members, soothing the bad moods of a husband or the emotions of a teenage daughter. Delia works her hands up to her elbows, and all she gets in return is more times, resentments, and frolics. She is also convinced that her daughter, who is preparing to get married, will suffer a similar fate. However, one day a letter arrives that provokes her to rebel and prompts her to perform surprisingly bold acts that no one expects from a housewife. "Tomorrow will be ours" exudes a spirit of change, a belief in the power of women and female solidarity. It is also an ode to the beautiful yet turbulent relationship between mothers and daughters.
This Italian blockbuster is set in post-war Rome recovering from the crisis and draws on the works of neorealism, but puts contemporary content into the noble tradition. For "Tomorrow Will Be Ours" speaks of a collective awakening, of women who first dared to stand up against the legacy of violence. Interweaving laughter and tears, directly touching on painful experiences, and as light as a Roman vacation, Cortellesi's film proves that the future lies - literally - in our hands. Have we won something for ourselves since the days of our grandmothers? Yes, and we'd better watch it hard, says the director.
To the rhythm of Italian ballads, Cortellesi's film takes us through compassion, rage, laughter and emotion, both confronting us with the brutal truth and offering endless layers of hope. Bella ciao!
