Mr. Marston is dead and his relatives are somewhat perplexed: everyone assumed that the inheritance would be divided equally between his sister Edna, his nephew Philip and his foster daughter Emily. But now the lion's share of the not inconsiderable fortune is to go to Emily. Soon irritating and increasingly dangerous things begin to happen at the manor house. Emily's life seems to be in serious danger, so Miss Marple, an old friend of Miss Edna's, and Inspector Blake from Scotland Yard have their hands full trying to protect the life of the rich heiress.
