"Appearances are deceptive" is a drama unique in Thomas Bernhard's oeuvre, a different, more tender one. It focuses on the relationship of two brothers who, at the end of their lives, are looking for each other back, trying to rebuild relationships," says director Tomasz Kaczorowski. - But it's also a story about art and those who practice it, about the conflict of which art is more important. Also about what theater is for.
Thomas Bernhard's drama is a fascinating and, at the same time, frightening story about aging, getting weird and lost, but it is not devoid of peculiar touches of humor.
Charles (once a famous circus artist) and Robert (an actor who dreams of returning to the stage) are brothers who are united by their love for one woman and a common theme - art. Although they both hate the ritual, they meet every Tuesday at Charles' house and every Thursday at Robert's to reprove each other of their past faults, real and imagined.
Thomas Bernhard (1931 - 1989) was a prominent Austrian writer, one of the most important contributors to German-language literature in the 20th century. His works, despite numerous translations into Polish, are rarely seen in theaters. A barrier is the difficulty of access to licenses, resulting from the writer's will. In Poland, Bernhard's work has become known mainly through Krystian Lupa's excellent productions. The drama "Appearances are deceptive" had its Polish premiere at the Piwnica przy Krypcie theater.
