Prof. Tadeusz Antoni Gadacz, PhD - philosopher, religious scholar and former Catholic clergyman. A native of Krakow. Graduate of the Pontifical Academy of Theology in Cracow (now the Pontifical University of John Paul II). A close associate of Father Józef Tischner. Critical thinking is independent thinking, guided by values such as freedom, responsibility and goodness. It is empathetic, rational thinking, i.e. able to talk to and understand others and oneself with the goal of making such decisions and actions from which the most optimal good will result. Critical thinking is thinking over thinking, so the book outlines a map of thinking. It reveals the difference between purely intellectual and rational thinking. It draws attention to the sources of our beliefs and their influence on our thinking, the function of mythological thinking, the positive and negative effects of intuition and imagination, and the relationship between thinking and conscience. It informs about the social and technological conditions of thoughtlessness, the dangers of ideologies and conspiracy theories. It explains such concepts as truth, wisdom and stupidity, dogmatism, fanaticism, relativism and perspectivism. Finally, he answers the question of why humanistic thinking led to the Gulags and concentration camps. Why is the word "critical" in connection with thinking extremely important? Already Aristotle noted that man is the most dangerous animal because he has the most dangerous tool - thinking. We need to use it prudently especially today in the face of the looming climate catastrophe, the crisis of democracy, the growing economic and social inequalities that breed populism, and the not yet fully foreseeable consequences of the development of "artificial intelligence."
