Replacement for the radio tower.
The location is only intended to be temporary until the West Berlin TV tower opens. The transmitter mast, unlike the radio tower, is designed as a purely functional building.
In 1963 it goes into operation for the Sender Freies Berlin (SFB). The 230 m high mast replaces the radio tower, which had previously been used for broadcasting radio and television with its 150 m high antenna. The programs can now be broadcast far into the GDR.
The transmitter is not dismantled because a West Berlin TV tower is never built. The transmitter still broadcasts radio and television programs today.
