Themed route "Nature and infrastructure" developed by the Berlin Center for Industrial Culture industriekultur.berlin

With industrialization, Berlin's population grew rapidly.

The city center became too crowded. Open spaces on the outskirts of the city were opened up by rail and made even faster to reach as part of the major electrification of the S-Bahn in 1926/28. Space was created on the cleared outskirts of the Grunewald forest for modern residential areas and large-scale infrastructure. This is important for the economy and at the same time for the basic supply of the population with water, radio and leisure facilities, among other things. The generously planned new buildings include the House of Broadcasting, the exhibition center and the Wannsee lido. The choice of locations on the outskirts of the city also shows the forward-looking thinking in the 1920s. People were certain that Berlin would expand. It is beneficial for urban growth that Berlin lies on a huge treasure: a gigantic underground layer of water. A central water supply in Berlin was built in 1852 and was continually supplemented by new waterworks - such as those on the Havel and in the Grunewald. The Nazi regime had megalomaniac plans for Berlin with the idea of a world capital Germania. The monumentality of the exhibition center and the Olympic Stadium still bear witness to this today. The military technology faculty, on the other hand, is buried in Teufelsberg. Since 1921, the AVUS has cut through the Grundwald parallel to the railway. As an automobile traffic and training road, it was the first road in the world to be used only by cars and was the scene of spectacular car races until 1998.
