Orientation for safe landing

The term lighting goes back to seafaring, when harbor entrances were marked with beacons. Tempelhof Airport has had an electric lighting system since the 1948 airlift.

It was replaced in 1962. Since then, this system has shown pilots the way to the runway well outside the airfield.
