The building of the former canning factory

The building of the former canning factory dates from 1927–1928. The factory belonged to Carl Zypries. It was a meat processing plant that produced sausages, hams, processed poultry, and canned goods. A small flag visible at the top of the building, bearing the inscription “1927,” commemorates its construction date. The building is monumental and eye-catching, clearly visible from the access road from Szczecin to Sławno. Unfortunately, it remains neglected and gives the impression of being completely abandoned. The building was designed by Diedrich Suhr—a young architect from Sławno who was active in the city from 1921 to 1929. Other examples of his work can also be seen in Sławno, such as St. Anthony’s Church and the current Sławno Cultural Center.

Until 1961, the former factory building housed the “Smakosz” Production Cooperative. In 1961, a poultry processing plant began operations there; it remained in operation until 1996, when the company declared bankruptcy. At the height of its success, the poultry company employed approximately 700 workers and generated substantial profits. The building was sold to a company from Golub-Dobrzyń and remains in its possession to this day. In 2005, the building was designated a historic monument and placed under conservation protection. It currently requires a complete renovation. The residents of Sławno are deeply interested in the building’s future.
