The building was constructed between 1872 and 1873 as the second building of the former Princess Jadwiga Gymnasium. It is located at the intersection of Księżnej Elżbiety Street and Piotra Skargi Street. The red-brick building is two stories high, with an attic and tall stepped gables. Initially, the building was used for teaching and reading—it housed a library, classrooms, and laboratories. The first floor was converted into an apartment for the principal, hence the building’s name. Across the street, right next door, a residence was built for the school janitor, colloquially known as the Janitor’s House—today it houses a pierogi restaurant bearing the same charming name. In 1913, the middle school moved to a new building in the city park. From then on, the Headmaster’s House also served as a boarding house for other teachers and the school’s female students.
