In Lipiany, the historic layout of the Old Town has been preserved to this day; it is situated in a location with natural defensive advantages between Lake Wądół and Lake Kościelne. The origins of the Old Town date back to the first half of the 14th century, when Lipiany was granted town privileges. At that time, a distinctive elliptical street grid with a centrally located market square was laid out—a layout that remains clearly visible to this day. Adjacent to the market square is a quarter containing the town parish church, which is also a distinctive feature of the town’s former urban layout. In the Middle Ages, the city’s elliptical layout was surrounded by stone-and-brick walls. Today, fragments of the walls remain in the northeastern part of the Old Town, along with the Gothic gates that defended the city in the early 15th century—the Pyrzycka Gate and the Myśliborska Gate. Other important structures within the historic urban layout include the Town Hall, located on the western side of the market square, along with the adjacent fountain depicting townspeople drinking Lipia beer. Another medieval feature of the Old Town is the fragments of stone walls from the 13th-century parish church, visible in the walls of the parish church’s chancel. The entire Old Town complex is listed in the register of historic monuments.
