In the first half of the 14th century, construction of the fortifications began. Barlinek was surrounded by an elliptical ring of a seven-meter-high stone wall. The Myśliborska and Młyńska gates led into the town. Access to the lake’s shore was possible through the Mała and Wielka water gates. The defenses were reinforced by 27 towers and watchtowers. In the 1820s, the walls and gates, which had been hindering the town’s development, were largely demolished. Today, we can admire two sections of the walls: a lowered section between Jeziorna and Grodzka Streets, and a better-preserved section at the intersection of Chmielna and Górna Streets. Along the latter, you can see the crown of the walls, a watchtower, and the Psia Gate.
