The Market Square is currently the city’s largest concentration of valuable historical monuments; it is home to St. Mary’s Collegiate Church and the eastern row of buildings, which consists of City Hall, the Guardhouse, and two Neo-Baroque townhouses. After World War II, the Market Square (like much of the city) lost its original appearance. The most beautiful townhouses—such as the Loewen Aphoteke from 1487 or the townhouse modeled after the Town Hall’s facade—were replaced by prefabricated concrete panel buildings.
