My approach to this sculpture, commissioned by the Ribnitz-Damgarten Lions Club, came about after conversations with people who still knew Olga von Oertzen personally and who described her as a very original, edgy personality who sometimes banged the table with a knotted stick when things went too slowly for her at the authorities, because she had campaigned vehemently for refugees during and after the war.
The fact that her dog Optimus was her constant companion and that she liked to smoke cigars was, of course, a welcome starting point for the depiction with her somewhat martial demeanor. Perhaps the lettering in the stele could have been a little stronger, but it should not be too memorial-like, but rather offer something to discover. -Reinhard Dietrich-
