There are many indications today that the Basilica of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built on the former Temple Hill of the Wendish people of Müritz. Representing a transitional Romanesque-Gothic style, the first extension to the nave, which originally had two bays, took place in the 14th century. This makes this distinctive Röbel building one of the oldest brick buildings in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

The decoration of the choir stalls, as well as the later high land endowment of St. Mary's Church, testify to the ducal influence - the not-so-wealthy houses of the Altröbel service providers would not have been able to afford such an expensive brick build on their own. Thanks to the high income from the land lease and the considerable financial support of the Grand Duke of Mecklenburg as heir to the Dukes of Werle-Wenden, the church was able to be thoroughly renovated between 1849 and 1851.

Thanks to the ongoing efforts of the church, the city and the country, St. Mary's Church has become a true "pearl" of the region - climbing the tower reveals the vastness of the country.... Enjoy the unobstructed view!
