The former quarry, like the nearby Turquoise Lake, is linked to the history of chalk mining in this area. A Portland cement factory, founded by Johannes Quistorp in 1829, operated in nearby Lubin. Local raw materials were used, and the site was mined on a massive scale. Mining continued even after the war, but operations were permanently shut down in 1954. It was then that groundwater and rainwater began to fill the excavation basin once again. Around 1960, the water level rose to match that of the Szczecin Lagoon.
