Emmanuel Lasker was born on December 24, 1868, in Barlinek, the fourth child of the cantor of the local synagogue. He attended elementary school there. After graduating from the gymnasium in Gorzów in 1888, he moved to Berlin to study mathematics and philosophy at the University of Berlin. Thanks to his older brother Bertold, who was studying medicine, he began his chess career. He defeated the most renowned chess players, which brought the young Lasker not only money but also fame. At the age of 25, he became the world chess champion.
