What Are the Polish-German Cycling Tourism Days?

This is a recurring, two-day event held at the headquarters of the Marshal’s Office of the West Pomeranian Voivodeship in Szczecin. A key element of the program is the Friday industry conference, attended by approximately 180 people representing local governments, road authorities, institutions responsible for implementing infrastructure projects, tourism organizations, NGOs, cycling communities, and individuals actively working to promote cycling and sustainable mobility. Saturday’s program (for which registration will be handled separately) is a much larger event open to everyone. This year’s edition features, among other things, 21 hours of lectures and workshops, 60 speakers, 56 exhibitors, bicycle equipment test rides, and activities and attractions for children. The bicycle workshop, where participants could have their bikes inspected before the season and receive minor repairs, was also very popular. You can view this year’s program in this article:Program of the Industry Conference as Part of the 3rd Polish-German Cycling Tourism Days – Western Pomerania

What kind of presentations are we looking for?

We’re interested in practical experiences, inspiring ideas, and solutions that can also be applied in other places. These do not have to be large-scale investments or extensive projects; local initiatives, small-scale amenities, interesting attractions along the routes, or ideas for engaging residents and tourists are equally valuable. We particularly encourage the presentation of specific examples from Poland and Germany, along with the lessons learned and experiences gained from their implementation.

To make it easier to choose a presentation topic and to inspire potential speakers, we have prepared several thematic areas around which we would like to focus this year’s presentations. However, you do not have to strictly adhere to any of them! We are interested in a variety of experiences, ideas, and best practices related to bicycle tourism. We will also gladly consider submissions on other topics and then assign them to the appropriate sections of the program.

1. Development of bike routes and cyclist-friendly infrastructure, including cross-border initiatives

From large-scale investments to small-scale solutions that improve the quality of cycling.

  • development, modernization, and maintenance of bike routes,
  • signage, facilitating navigation, establishing detours,
  • rest areas, shelters, Cyclist Service Stations, service points,
  • solutions to improve cyclists’ safety and comfort,
  • Polish-German cooperation in infrastructure development,
  • local ideas and best practices worth emulating.

2. How to Create Attractive Places and Experiences for Cyclists

How can we ensure that a bike route not only passes through scenic landscapes but also leads to interesting places, people, and experiences?

  • attractions along bike routes,
  • development of tourism offerings,
  • cyclist-friendly places,
  • collaboration between local governments, tourism organizations, businesses, and residents,
  • local products and services for cycling tourists,
  • examples of successful initiatives from Poland and Germany,
  • the impact of cycling tourism on local development.

3. Route Management, Data, and New Technologies

How can we develop routes and tourism offerings based on user needs, available information, and practical experience?

  • monitoring bicycle traffic,
  • understanding cyclists’ needs and opinions
  • user surveys and studies,
  • digital maps and GIS,
  • apps and tools for cyclists.

4. Promotion, events, and community engagement

How can we encourage cycling tourism, promote regions, and engage people in the development of local initiatives?

  • cycling events and rides,
  • engaging residents and volunteers,
  • promotion of routes and regions,
  • Polish-German cooperation in organizing events and promotion
  • education and awareness campaigns,
  • proven ideas that can also be applied in other places.

In each section, we welcome both larger projects and smaller local initiatives, practical solutions, and experiences that others can benefit from.
