Shelters where bicycle travelers can rest, eat a meal, dry their clothes - will be built along the Blue Velo route leading from the sea to the south of the province. Five shelters are planned in the municipalities of Międzyzdroje, Wolin and Stepnica. The exact locations and technical details have already been determined. A contractor is to be selected in June, and the structures should be ready in autumn.

Special shelters for travelers on two wheels are constructions well known from bicycle routes in Germany, for example. They are a place to rest, have a meal, and sometimes a longer stop, an emergency overnight stay. They provide shelter from rain and wind. They are constructed to provide comfort even in adverse weather conditions.

Places where one can rest for a longer period of time, prepare a meal on a tourist stove, take shelter from a storm - during longer expeditions they are worth their weight in gold," says Marshal Olgierd Geblewicz. - This year we want to build five special shelters for cyclists along the very popular route from the Baltic Sea, along the shore of the Szczecin Lagoon, explains Olgierd Geblewicz.

The shelters will be built near Miedzyzdroje - in Wicko (near the V-3 minimuseum bunker) and in the vicinity of Lubiewo by the beach; north of Wolin by the Lagoon itself and by the windmill; and Czarnocin by the Lagoon Nature Park.

These are places very popular with two-wheeled enthusiasts. The Blue Velo route connects with the popular Velo Baltica and overlaps with the eastern section of the route around the Szczecin Lagoon, leading to the south of the province.

It is already known what the refuge areas for cyclists will look like: 5.35 meters wide; 4.35 meters long; height - almost 4 meters. Built-up area - more than 23 meters, usable area: 15.61 square meters. They are to be covered with larch wood shingles, in two layers. Under the shelter there will be a wooden table on a steel structure, seats, bicycle racks made of steel profiles. Also planned are a four-compartment waste garbage can (segregated) and information boards (one will include a map).

The proceeding for "Construction of five resting places for cyclists at five locations along the Blue Velo route as part of the implementation of the INT 174 project titled. "Cycling route around the Szczecin Lagoon - common identity of the borderland" was announced on May 31, 2022. The deadline for submitting bids is June 15.

The shelters will be built on the basis of a construction and detailed design drawn up by MXL4. This is the architectural studio that prepared the project for the reconstruction of the Siekierki bridge with the now famous viewing platform. The construction of the shelters is also very interesting. They can become one of the tourist landmarks of Western Pomerania and an additional attraction for bicycle trips. Importantly, the prepared project will be able to be used by municipalities or forest managers and build more shelters in their areas.

The contractor will have up to 70 days from the signing of the contract to carry out the task described in the order. The scope of work includes earthworks, construction of mortar and concrete base and foundation, construction of the structure and roofing, construction and installation works, strengthening of roadsides by planting and humus planting with grass sowing, construction of landscaping elements.

The INT 174 project partner is the County of Greifswald and Turismusverband Vorpommern (Vorpommern Tourism Association).
