This investment marks the start of construction of the northern section of the Berlin–Szczecin–Kołobrzeg route. In this way, more towns and villages are joining the network of long-distance cycle routes in Western Pomerania. For now, the Golczewo–Upadły section will be completed, but ultimately a coherent route No. 800 will be created, leading from Stepnica, through Gryfice, to Gościno, with the possibility of continuing along the Blue Velo and Old Railway Trail routes.
"We are launching another important cycling investment, or rather its first stage. Today, it is quite safe to cycle from Berlin to Kołobrzeg, but you have to do so via the bridge in Siekierki as part of the Lake District Route. We want to make it possible to do so from the north, discovering the wonderful areas of the Goleniowska Forest and the Golczewska Region. It will certainly be a very charming route,” emphasised Olgierd Geblewicz, Marshal of the Province.
In the second quarter of 2026, tenders are planned to be announced for the following sections: Stepnica–Babigoszcz, Kłodzino–Golczewo and Upadły–Świeszewo. By 2029, a completely new section of the route between Stepnica and Ryman, over 82 km long, is to be built. The entire route from Berlin to Kołobrzeg will be approximately 800 km long.
The task for which the construction site was handed over includes the construction of a cycle path from the intersection with Witosa Street towards Upadłych. A greenway over 5 kilometres long will be created, i.e. a route away from motor traffic, which increases safety and comfort. It will follow the route of the former narrow-gauge railway from 1901 — the Gülzow Landesbahnhof station, later Golczewo Wąskotorowe. The line, which was closed in 1996, had been unused for three decades. Today, it is regaining new life as a safe and attractive cycle route.
‘We are consistently implementing our ambitious plan to build a coherent network of cycle routes in the region. This investment only confirms this,’ said Jakub Kowalik, Deputy Marshal of the Province.
The construction of the Golczewo-Upadły section, as well as the marking and creation of the trail on both sides of the border, is being carried out as part of Interreg VI A Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania/Brandenburg/Poland 2021-2027. Western Pomerania has received EUR 2.5 million from this programme for this purpose. In addition, several dozen million zlotys will be allocated from the European Funds for Western Pomerania for further sections. The cost of construction and marking of the route between Stepnica and Gościno is estimated at approximately PLN 133 million, of which PLN 93 million will come from EU funds and PLN 40 million will be own contribution.
“Thanks to this investment, we will gain easier access to the sea, as the path will lead to Kołobrzeg. For us, this may mean opening up to tourists, as additional tourist facilities, accommodation and services will be created,” said Maciej Zieliński, Mayor of Golczewo, in February last year.
The entire 800 km route will largely use existing cycling and forest infrastructure. The new section will connect Stepnica with Ryman and further on with existing cycle paths towards Gościno and Kołobrzeg. Golczewo is located in the very centre of this investment. On the map of the first stage of the bicycle network, there was still an empty space in the north-western part of the region – today, the missing element has been added to complete the Western Pomerania network.
Once the investment is completed, it will be possible to cycle from the municipality of Golczewo to: Szczecin and Wolin (west), Gryfice and Trzebiatów (north) and Kołobrzeg and Białogard (east).
“This route connects places that were previously inaccessible to cyclists, but it also connects people. It opens up new opportunities and creates a cohesive, modern, cyclist-friendly Western Pomerania,” said Wanda Nowotarska, the Marshal of the Province’s representative for bicycle transport, assessing the infrastructure.
The contractor for the initial stage will be COLAS Polska, selected in a tender. The cost of the construction works will amount to approximately PLN 6 million. The contractor will have 250 days from the date of signing the contract to complete all the works. The construction works should therefore be completed in October this year. The scope of works includes, among others: site clearance, demolition works, earthworks, construction of new structural layers of the cycle path, shoulders, bicycle traffic safety devices and new signage.
