Church of St. John the Evangelist

The 14th-century church, included in the European Route of Brick Gothic, is a remainder of a Franciscan monastery complex. The temple is styled after the French sacral architecture of the early Gothic period.

St. John's Church in Szczecin dates from the Middle Ages and currently is a part of the deanery of Szczecin-Śródmieście [the City Centre]. The history of this building is inextricably linked with the Franciscan monastery, which was founded after the monks were brought there by Barnim I the Good, the Duke of Pomerania, in the 1240s.

The church, thanks to its original Gothic elements, is a very beautiful example of the Western Pomeranian architecture. It is also associated with the early Gothic style of cathedral construction in France. One of the confirming examples can be the three-span, one-nave presbytery with the heptagonal termination. The main nave is equipped with slender lancet windows with stained glass windows and surrounding brick frieze below the roof line. What draws our attention inside is extremely subtle lighting of the altar and chancel, and few elements that prove the long history of the church (including frescoes, figural brackets and the Baroque organ from the eighteenth century).
