The old town of Świdwin is located on 1 Maja Street. It is a charming place, one of the most beautiful and representative in the city. The street is lined on both sides with tenement houses dating back to the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. These are tall tenement houses, which have been modernized many times, but have not lost their historic character. Most of the buildings in this area are half-timbered and have hipped roofs. 1 Maja Street is paved, which only adds to the charm of this place. The most impressive building in the old town and on 1 Maja Street is the Stone Gate, built in the 14th century. During World War II, the market square suffered greatly and was almost completely destroyed. The only building that survived was the “Monopol” hotel, which at that time served as a military hospital. After the war, the building was the seat of the Presidium of the County National Council. Then, for years, it was unused and fell into ruin. However, the city authorities decided to renovate the building and turned it into the seat of the Świdwin County authorities.
