A walk on the boardwalk over the water is a must-do attraction during a stay in Kołobrzeg. Since the major renovation in 2014, the planks are no longer made of wood; the new ones are made of a plastic composite. The renovation was long overdue, as the 220-meter-long reinforced concrete pier was opened in June 1971 and had undergone only cosmetic repairs since then. Strolling and relaxing on the benches are a given, and in the summer, you can also set up lounge chairs. At the head of the pier, on two levels, there are terraces covering an area of 620 square meters, and a seasonal restaurant is open there. A small pond allows tourists to toss coins “for good luck” and as a way to predict whether they’ll return to this place. The pier offers a beautiful view of Kołobrzeg’s beach, park, and harbor. During storms, the waves flooding the structure and crashing against the concrete pier several meters high are a major attraction. Attempts to launch sightseeing cruises from the head of the pier ended in failure after a short time—the water is too shallow at that point. The pier is open 24 hours a day, year-round, regardless of the weather. Streetlights are spaced along the entire length on both sides of the walking path. The colorful lighting, installed in 2015, is particularly impressive. Jumping into the sea is prohibited here. Under favorable conditions, it is possible to wade through the water to the pier’s head, but only when there are no waves and the seabed is suitably shaped—which can be unstable and change from day to day, depending on ocean currents. In 2012, the Kołobrzeg pier was voted the most romantic place in the province by users of the onet.pl website.
